Selling digital products online is one of the few businesses you can start this week with almost no money. There is no stock, no shipping, and every extra sale costs you nearly nothing. What it does take is picking the right product, a place to sell it, and a way for people to find it. This guide walks through all three.
Step 1: Pick a product people already want
The best first product solves a specific problem for a specific person. Good signs:
People ask you the same question again and again.
You see the question asked on forums or in comments.
Someone already sells something similar. That is proof of demand, not a reason to stop.
Common formats, from fastest to slowest to make:
Templates and checklists. Spreadsheets, planners, contract templates, social media templates.
Ebooks and guides. A focused guide that solves one problem well beats a long book.
Printables. Worksheets, trackers, wall art.
Presets and assets. Photo presets, fonts, icons, music loops.
Online courses. More work, higher price, and the most room to help people properly.
Memberships. Ongoing content or a community for a monthly fee.
If you are unsure, start with a small template or guide. You will learn more from selling a 15 dollar product than from planning a 300 dollar one.
Step 2: Choose where to sell
You have three broad options.
A marketplace. Large marketplaces bring their own traffic, but take a cut of each sale, set the rules, and own the customer relationship.
A simple checkout link. Fast to set up, but you still need somewhere for people to land and a way to follow up.
Your own site with checkout and email. More setup, but you keep the customer list, and the list is what lets you sell again.
For most people the right answer is to own the customer list from day one, even if you also sell on a marketplace.
Step 3: Build the minimum setup
You need four things:
A sales page that says who the product is for, what problem it solves, what is inside, and the price.
A checkout that takes card payments and delivers the file or course access automatically.
An email list so buyers and interested visitors hear from you again.
A free sample or lead magnet so people who are not ready to buy still join the list.
An all in one platform covers all four in one account. We use and recommend systeme.io here: its free plan includes a sales funnel, a checkout, email marketing and one course, which is enough to launch a first product without paying for software. Read our systeme.io page for the limits of the free plan.
Step 4: Get your first buyers
Tell the people you already know. Friends, colleagues, an existing following, however small.
Answer questions where your buyers ask them. Forums, groups, comment sections. Help first, link second.
Write one search friendly article around the problem your product solves, and link to the product from it.
Use your list. Every free sample download is a future buyer.
Step 5: Improve from real numbers
Track three numbers: visitors to the sales page, the share who buy, and the share of email subscribers who buy within a month. Fix the weakest one first. Usually that means a clearer sales page headline or a better free sample.
The short version
Pick one small product that solves a real problem, sell it from a page you control, collect email addresses from day one, and improve the step where most people drop off.
